Community
Projects:
The
members of Gems of the Prairie Quilters use their time and talents
to make quilts for children. From the smallest quilt, measuring
a mere 14" by 18" for St. Francis NICU to the larger
lap robes, given to patients at St. Jude, we are happy to use
our skills for these worthwhile causes. In 2004, we added WomenStrength
to our list of charities.

WomenStrength:
When there is an abusive situation in the
home, often the woman and her children will leave the house in
a hurry to seek safe shelter. The Gems feel that the kids who
are affected would love to have their own cute quilt. view

Baby
Quilts for St. Francis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:
The highlight of this project is the NICU quilt
contest, an annual event. Members vote on the quilts to determine
the winners of the three prizes and the quilts are then donated
to the nursery, where they add a homey touch to a necessarily
sterile environment. Approximately 100 quilts were donated last
year after they were displayed at the quilt show. view

Gems Quilts for St. Jude Peoria Affiliate:
The quilts made for this project are
given to the patients at the St. Jude Peoria Affiliate at St.
Francis Hospital. Packets containing the pieces for the quilts
and directions are given to members who assemble and/or quilt
the completed top. Other members donate completed quilts. Approximately
50 quilts are donated to these young cancer patients every year.
